Matching the Right Dentist With Your Family

The Academy of General Dentistry recommends asking questions as one of the primary steps when looking for a family dentist.  Detroit residents will find that one of its many general dentists will answer those questions satisfactorily.

What are the right questions to ask?  Start with asking people you know about the dentists that they are familiar with and consider making a consultation appointment based on that word of mouth recommendation.  Once there ask about any concerns that you may have regarding initial training, on-going training,  and emergency care for starters.

If the answers seem to fit your needs then schedule a general appointment for routine exam and cleaning.  If all goes well, then this might be the one.  Whatever approach is taken, the last thing that should happen is that you choose a family dentist in the middle of a dental emergency. Think ahead and plan for all eventualities.

A health savings account may be an option if dental insurance leaves gaps in coverage.  Some dentists accepts a type of dental credit account through a private company; others carry  their own payment plans.  Even very good dental insurance usually has a co-payment or leaves some expensive treatments with less than 100% coverage.  Careful planning can prevent making health decisions based on ability to pay.

The American Dental Association has some additional points to consider when choosing a new family dentist.  Among these is to ask if the dentist under consideration has a good organized method of gathering and storing dental and general health information.

Consider the convenience of the dental office to home.  Consider the office hours; larger practices may offer evening or weekend appointments which may be the trump card when considered against all of the prospective dentists’ attributes. It does little good to locate the best and most modern practice only to find that it is just impossible to get an appointment.

Decide before making any further dental appointments if a family dentist is going to be able to fill the needs of your family.  Ask yourself if any family members have special needs that the family dentist can not fill.  Young children may  benefit from visiting  pediatric dentists.  They will address issues of pediatric concern more closely than a general dentist may be able to do.

Another possibility is that a family member may have extenuating health issues which may require visiting a dentist who tends to treat persons with those same issues even when a formal specialization does not exist.  Some dentists have more patients  with geriatric concerns ; others exhibit greater ease when treating patients suffering from communicative diseases.

This may only be a subtle difference in bedside manner or the kinds of patients with whom the family member will associate with while waiting to see the dentist. If someone living your household is from the “old country”, whichever one that might be, he or she may be more at ease with a dentist who speaks the same native language. Consider everyone’s needs when choosing a family dentist especially if your dental insurance requires picking only one primary care giver.

With careful planning, selection of a family dentist Detroit, or elsewhere, can lead to years of confident dental care.
